Worried about that thinning spot at the crown of your head? Millions of men are similarly worried and have turned to medication to address male-pattern baldness. The pharmaceutical industry is happy to comply, rushing all sorts of treatments to the market. The latest round of fighting hair loss involves prescription drugs that claim to reverse such loss. Propecia, which is manufactured by Merck, has been a commercial success.

As the number of users has increased, so has the side effects. Some men have experienced a decrease in their sex drive, a side effect that for some has lasted even after they have stopped taking the medication. Merck has noted that these side effects happen but are very rare and decrease with continued use. The debate continues on as the results of independent studies have been mixed.

There have also been reports of other side effects. Many men are reporting depression and suicidal thoughts while on the medication as a result of the sexual dysfunction issues. In California, a wrongful death lawsuit has recently been filed after one man suffered from depression and anxiety from the use of Propecia. His mental health declined to the point where he committed suicide.

Increasingly, international studies have found myriad issues with the drug including penile shrinkage, gynecomastia, insomnia, and panic attacks. Many men also report problems with their endocrine system after cessation of the drug.

Men have also been taking Proscar, a drug along with Propecia, which has been used in the treatment of prostate cancer. It is a stronger version of Propecia and has even better results with reversing male pattern baldness.

Hundreds of lawsuits have been filed claiming merck has misled users about the length and severity of the symptoms. Fortunately, the number of studies has prompted the FDA to force Merck to revise its labels in light of reviewing the required reporting of adverse events.

If you are experiencing side effects, it is important to seek the advice of a competent attorney immediately and seek medical assistance to document the injuries.
